Ms. Uthit Phutthasut Somchai
In September 2007 the first ever Prateep Ungsongtham Hata Award was presented to Ms. Uthit Phutthasut Somchai, who has dedicated many years to improving the situation of impoverished children in and around Khon Kaen Province in Northeast Thailand.
Uthit Phuttasut Somchai is a forty-four year-old from Khon Kaen Province. Uthit first gained experience in social work while working for the Foundation for Slum Child Care (founded by Prateep) in Bangkok from 1984. At the age of twenty-four Uthit returned to Khon Kaen, where she has since been dedicated to helping poor children.
Uthit first established and led the Rural Thai Child Care Foundation, before also going on to help slum children in Khon Kaen and neighbouring provinces through founding and leading the Child Help Foundation. Uthit's work helps support children and strengthens family relationships. A study centre provides education opportunities for school children. A home is provided for runaway, abandoned and abused children.
The presentation of the Prateep Ungsongtham Hata Award was hosted by the Stock Exchange of Thailand. Uthit said she had never expected to receive such a prestigious award and talked about how the prize will help her work with disadvantaged children.
